NATO promises to speed up Swedish and Finland accession

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg believes that the process of Sweden and Finland joining the alliance will be swift.

According to him, these countries must decide for themselves whether to apply for membership in NATO or not, and if they want to join the alliance, they will be accepted with great joy.

“Sweden and Finland are our closest partners, we have worked with them for many years, and their armed forces meet NATO standards … I expect the accession process to be fast,” said Stoltenberg.

He added that NATO will find a way to ensure the security of the two countries during the transition period between submission of applications and formal approval.

Earlier, Iltalehti reported that Finland and Sweden will apply for NATO membership between May 16-20.
