Minister of Tourism and Antiquities discusses ways of cooperation with Japanese Ambassador and Head of JICA Office

Today, Sherif Fathy, Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, received at the ministry’s headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, Ambassador Oka Hiroshi, Ambassador of Japan to Cairo, and Kato Ken, Head of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Office in Egypt, and the accompanying delegation, to discuss mechanisms to enhance cooperation between the Egyptian and Japanese sides, the projects currently being implemented, and future cooperation plans in the field of tourism and antiquities.

This meeting comes within the framework of the strategic partnership between the Egyptian and Japanese sides and the keenness to strengthen joint relations on the tourism and archaeological levels.

He began  The Minister welcomed the Japanese delegation, praising the strong friendship between the two countries, which is witnessing fruitful cooperation in various fields, including tourism and antiquities, including the Grand Egyptian Museum project, the extraction, restoration and reassembly of the second Khufu ship, in addition to restoration and archaeological documentation work in many archaeological sites across the country, as well as excavation work, as a number of Japanese archaeological missions have been working for many years in many archaeological sites across the country.

During the meeting, ways to enhance joint cooperation were discussed to attract more incoming tourism from the Japanese market to the Egyptian tourist destination, and to exchange expertise and training in the field of tourism and antiquities, in addition to coordinating with the Egyptian side to cooperate in implementing the research strategy of the Grand Egyptian Museum to become not only the largest museum in the world for ancient Egyptian antiquities, but also the largest regional research center for the study of Egyptology and museums and training countries in the region on the skills acquired by Egyptian restorers and archaeologists in this field.

For his part, the Japanese Ambassador praised the work accomplished within the framework of this cooperation, reviewing the projects The projects being implemented in the field of tourism and archaeology within the framework of this partnership, stressing his keenness to continue this constructive cooperation between the two countries in a way that serves common interests. He also praised the development and efficiency of the services provided by museums and archaeological sites in Egypt.

It is worth noting that Egyptian-Japanese relations are witnessing cooperation at the tourism and archaeological level, including a number of archaeological projects, and a number of memoranda of understanding signed in the field of antiquities and museums, in addition to the annual participation of the Egyptian General Authority for Tourism Promotion in the Japan International Tourism and Travel Exhibition "Tourism Expo Japan". The year 2025 will also witness Japan hosting the temporary antiquities exhibition "Ramses and the Gold of the Pharaohs".

The meeting was attended by Yamna Al-Bahar, Deputy Minister, Dr. Mohamed Ismail Khaled, Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and Ambassador Khaled Tharwat, Advisor to the Minister for International Relations and General Supervisor of the General Administration of International Relations and Agreements at the Ministry.
