Dr. Hani Sweilem, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, held a meeting to follow up on the status of operating agricultural wastewater treatment plants in Egypt and training the ministry’s engineers and technicians to operate them.
Dr.Sweilem indicated that there is a gap between Water resources and needs in Egypt have prompted the Egyptian state to take many measures in the field of reusing agricultural drainage water over the past many decades by reusing it along 55 thousand kilometers of canals and drains, and also The recent expansion in the field of agricultural wastewater treatment as one of the pillars of the second generation irrigation system 2.0, by establishing (3) major treatment plants at the end of the agricultural drainage network (New Delta – Bahr Al-Baqar – Al-Mahsama) with a total capacity of up to 4.80 billion cubic metres. Annually.
He pointed to increasing reliance on advanced treatment and reuse of agricultural wastewater in Egypt as one of the most important solutions to expand the agricultural area in Egypt, especially with limited water resources and the large gap between resources and water needs, where the water produced from the three treatment plants will be used to reclaim new areas of agricultural land in northern and central Sinai and the western Delta, with the need to take into account and study the dimension of the impact of the use of agricultural wastewater on the increasing rates of Salinity in the agricultural soil that is irrigated with this treated water, and choosing the appropriate crops for cultivation in a way that achieves the highest economic return.
He emphasized that He stressed the importance of training the Ministry’s engineers and technicians on the latest water treatment technology and operating and maintaining major agricultural drainage treatment plants, as the transition from the first generation to the second generation of the irrigation system in Egypt requires an advanced generation of competent engineers and technicians capable of implementing this important transformation, adding that the new training system The Ministry requires all Ministry engineers to pass a specific number of training hours annually to ensure continuity of capacity building and keep pace with global technological development.
