Minister of Irrigation: Egypt is keen to support development in the Nile Basin countries

The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, Dr. Hani Sweilem, affirmed that Egypt is keen to support development in the Nile Basin countries, enhance cooperation and achieve progress in it, as it is one of the basic pillars of Egypt’s water policy, and Egypt’s commitment to providing technical expertise and financial support to various projects that serve citizens in the Nile Basin countries through… Practical measures that achieve well-being and prosperity for all, help African countries achieve sustainable development, enhance the environmental sustainability of water resources in the basin, and support the effective use of river resources to achieve economic development.

This came during a meeting held by the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation with a number of The Ministry’s leaders, to review the work files of the Nile Water Affairs Sector related to bilateral cooperation with international bodies specialized in the field of water. The position of bilateral cooperation projects with the Nile Basin countries and African countries was also reviewed, and Egypt’s efforts during its presidency of the Council of African Ministers of Water (AMCO), and the position of the international initiative. To adapt to climate changes in the field of water (AWARe).

Dr. Sweilem reviewed the cooperative approach followed by Egypt to enhance cooperation with the Nile Basin countries by implementing projects to serve the citizens of these countries, such as establishing underground wells. Powered by solar energy for drinking purposes, ground tanks and river anchorages, weed control projects, the establishment of flood forecasting centres, a water quality centre, the exchange of visits and applied research, and the implementation of technical studies for integrated management of water resources in the Nile Basin countries, in addition to training and capacity building for 1,650 trainees from 52 African countries.  

The minister said that the ministry’s efforts were also reviewed at the African level, as Egypt made notable efforts in 2023. And 2024 during Egypt’s presidency of the Council of African Ministers of Water (AMCO), continuing until February 2025, as Egypt was keen to strengthen cooperation between African countries, and Africa, under Egyptian leadership, played an important role at the global level during many international events, during which the continent presented a common vision. It calls for achieving prosperity for all and a safe and prosperous future for water.

He pointed to the efforts made at the international level, as Egypt continued its efforts to raise the status of water on the global agenda by emphasizing “the interconnection between “Water and Climate”, and Egypt’s launch of the “AWARe” initiative, in cooperation with many international partners, as this initiative aims to serve developing countries, especially African countries, and provide them with funding from donors to implement projects on the ground in the field of adaptation to climate change in the water sector.

He added that through the training and capacity building programs that are implemented at the African Training Center for Water and Climate Adaptation under the umbrella of the initiative, countries will be able to effectively address water-related challenges by raising the efficiency of specialists. African water workers.
