Minister of Electricity: Storing energy using batteries and supporting the private sector in the field of renewable energy

On the sidelines of his participation in the activities of the fifteenth session of the General Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency" IRENA” and the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Summit, Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, met with the delegation of the “AMEA POWER” company. Headed by Sheikh Hussein Al Nowais, to discuss ways to increase the company’s investments in the fields of renewable energy and energy storage using battery technology within the framework of the general direction, state policy and energy strategy, and to support the private sector and increase its investments and reliance on it in the fields of renewable energies and diversify sources of electricity generation and the energy mix.

 

The meeting discussed areas of joint work and developments in the implementation of the project to add a 300 megawatt-hour battery storage system to the 500 megawatt Abydos 1 project in Aswan Governorate, which It was opened last month, as well as the implementation of a project to generate 500 megawatts of wind energy in the Gulf of Suez, with the new capacity being connected to the unified network at the beginning of next summer. The meeting touched on the procedures that have been taken  To add capacities of up to 1,500 megawatts through independent storage batteries and accelerate taking the necessary steps in this project due to its importance in achieving stability for the network and maximizing returns from renewable energy. Discussions included developments in the implementation of the Abydos 2 solar energy project with a capacity of 1,000 megawatts in addition to a 600 megawatt-hour battery storage system. And other projects within the framework of partnership and cooperation between the electricity sector and Al Nowais Group.

 

The doctor confirmed Mahmoud Esmat said that the private sector is a major partner in implementing the energy strategy, expansion, and reliance on renewable energies, explaining the benefit of natural resources, especially new and renewable energy sources, and reaching the percentage of renewable energy’s contribution to the energy mix to more than 42% by the year  2030, and 65% in 2040, pointing to the interest that the electricity sector attaches to spreading the uses of renewable energies and reducing carbon emissions, increasing the contribution of renewable energy to the energy mix and diversifying the sources of energy production, praising the cooperation and partnership with “AMEA POWER” Company. Emirates, as well as the company’s commitment to the time plan and implementation schedules for its projects and working to add new capabilities to the network before their specified dates.
