Michigan fan speaks out after JD Vance threatens to sic Secret Service on him at Ohio State White House visit

After being called out by Vice President JD Vance at Ohio State football’s visit to the White House, a Michigan fan offered his side of the story during the encounter.
The Ohio State team was visiting the nation’s capital on invitation from President Trump to celebrate their national championship accomplishment from the 2024 season.
Back in January, the Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame to win the title.
But during a ceremony held in the Rose Garden for Ohio State, Vance spotted a man wearing a hat for the Buckeyes’ biggest rivals, the University of Michigan.
After fumbling the national championship trophy, Vance, an Ohio State alumnus, called the fan out and jokingly threatened to have the Secret Service arrest him.
‘I don’t know who let the guy over in the corner here in a Michigan hat into the celebration, but I’m about to tell the Secret Service you’ve got a dangerous weapon, sir,’ he cracked.

The man, Mark Gull, says he couldn’t give up on Michigan even though his daughter, Sophia (center) is an Ohio State graduate. Gull says his father set his fandom up for life.
After the celebration had concluded, the man in question – Mark Gull of Alexandria, Virginia – caught up with Joe Kinsey of Outkick to explain himself.
Gull was at the ceremony with his family – including his daughter, Sophia, who graduated from Ohio State in 2020.
Despite attempts to try and get him to give up his Wolverines fandom, Gull told the outlet that his father was from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and couldn’t swap sides.
‘I had to wear my hat today even if I got beat up,’ Gull said, before adding that the encounter was ‘awesome’.
Gull then tried explaining that he was ‘respecting’ Ohio State by attending, but had to stay true to himself.
‘They did a good job. Good for them,’ Gull said. ‘I feel good for the coach [Ryan Day] because he got a raw deal from the fans, so I thought I’d represent as a Michigan fan.’
After winning a national title in 2023, Michigan slumped in 2024. But they did manage to get a victory over Ohio State on the road – which ended with a massive brawl at midfield.
Ohio State was able to recover and went on to win their own national championship.
