Man is shot dead by police in Manning Base Hospital carpark in Taree after pulling a gun on an officer

An allegedly armed man pulled a gun on police before he was shot dead outside a regional hospital. 

The confrontation unfolded in the carpark of Manning Base Hospital in Taree on the NSW mid-north coast at about 12.55pm on Thursday.

‘The man allegedly pointed a firearm at the attending officers, and he was shot by police,’ a police statement read.

Police provided first aid until paramedics arrived.

The man aged in his 30s was taken then rushed into the hospital where he died a short time later.

No police officers or other members of the public were physically injured.

‘There were a lot of people around,’ a witness told Nine News. 

Shortly before the incident, police were called to Rouse St in nearby Wingham, following reports a man had fired shots into the air.

Those calls came five minutes after the police had been called to nearby Summerville St to conduct a concern for welfare check. 

Wingham is located 8.5km west of Taree.

Manning-Great Lakes officers attended the Rouse St scene and conducted a search of the area before they located the man 13km away in the hospital carpark half an hour later.

A critical incident team from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate what happened.

The investigation will also be subject to an independent review.
