"Maat" Discusses the reality of sustainable development in Arab conflict countries

Maat Foundation for Peace, Development and Rights organized an event entitled “Sustainable development in Arab countries affected by conflicts… towards joint efforts and collective action.” During the Arab Week for Sustainable Development.

The session, coordinated by Abdel Rahman Pasha, Director of Programs and Projects at the Maat Peace Foundation, focused on a group of diverse topics, where Dr. Salah Abdel Ati, President of the International Commission for Supporting the Rights of the Palestinian People, discussed – As the first speaker – the role of Western thought in the globalization of colonial values ​​in the region, pointing to the role of colonial thought in destroying all means of promoting identity and development within the societies of occupied Palestine and both Gaza and the West Bank as one of the repeated colonial plans, which is something that Creating new contexts for thinking about development frameworks to include development that supports liberation, development that supports and enhances the identity of local citizens, and development that supports Palestinian national unity. He also highlighted the importance of creating a mixed economic system that focuses on combining the promotion of human value and achieving economic development at the same time. Explaining that the Egyptian state and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had successful development models in this context.

 

While Fadi Walid Akoum, the writer and analyst, pointed out The Lebanese politician stressed the importance of looking at development from modern frameworks that include three aspects, which are studied development plans, civil society efforts, work, and media awareness, indicating that one of the factors of weak knowledge of development thought and practices in local communities results from the lack of media efforts to introduce them and create a mobilization and support for them, in The same context shed light on the reality of sustainable development in Lebanese society, which suffers from great complications resulting from its demographic and sectarian division, which has hindered the expansion of development efforts in a significant way. Horizontal within society, explaining the role of governments in advancing development by taking the first steps, which is what happened in the Lebanese experience, where the government headed by Prime Minister Rafik Hariri took the first step to advance development thought, which encouraged civil society to complete the steps.

 

While the speech of Dr. Heba Al-Hariri, Land and Water Officer at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), focused on discussing the challenges of water and food security within Arab conflict societies, noting that Arab societies are already suffering from crises. Water scarcity, and therefore conflicts represented an element of danger with an unprecedented impact on the countries of the region, as they played a role in disrupting the water, food and agricultural systems in local communities. She also highlighted during her talk the role of conflicts in creating multi-dimensional crises, most notably forced displacement during which people experience The displaced are in a state of almost complete lack of resources, which played a role in creating new development trends that include working to adopt innovative development plans and adopting specialized emergency strategies commensurate with the reality and needs of every community suffering from conflict. It also discussed the role of the organization FAO is studying the food needs of conflict communities and supporting Sudanese families through emergency relief and supporting ways to manage water resources in the Sana’a Basin in Yemen.
