Lisandro Martinez travels back from international duty early to join up with Man United boss Ruben Amorim – as the Argentine looks to make a good impression on his new manager

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has travelled back from international duty early to meet new manager Ruben Amorim.

The 26-year old was called up by Argentina to face Peru and Paraguay in their World Cup qualifiers but was ruled out after having an injury that he picked up against Leicester City evaluated.

Martinez still had permission to stay in Argentina with his family for the entirety of the international break but began the journey back to England on Saturday so that he can begin work early with Amorim.

His first step upon arrival in Manchester will be to undergo tests to assess the extent of the physical discomfort that prevented him from playing for Argentina.

The complaint originates from a knock to his lower back, near his hip, sustained during the victory over Leicester.

The issue was not made any easier by delayed flights en route to South America and the decision was made upon his arrival in Argentina not to take any risks that could worsen the pain or impact United more.

Martinez has cut a frustrated figure in recent months with United’s erratic form under Erik ten Hag, the manager who signed him from Ajax, and is determined to make a good impression and lay new foundations with Amorim who officially joined from Sporting Lisbon last week.

The Portuguese coach is expected to start work at Carrington this week once his visa and work permit has been cleared.
