Late Treat Williams & Ron Cephas Jones Nominated Side By Side, Anna Sawai Double Nominee – Critics Choice TV

The TV nominations for the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards delivered a pair of rare double nominations: two posthumous nods in the same category for Treat Williams and Ron Cephas Jones and a performer, Anna Sawai, with two acting nominations for non-English-speaking roles in Shōgun and Pachinko.

The Supporting Actor In a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television field features Williams and Cephas Jones who died within two months of each other this past summer. Williams is nominated for his role as William Paley in FX’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans while Cephas Jones was recognized for playing Elijah Muhammad in Nat Geo’s Genius: MLK/X. The rest of the nominees in the category include Robert Downey Jr. (The Sympathizer), Hugh Grant (The Regime), Logan Lerman (We Were the Lucky Ones) and Liev Schreiber (The Perfect Couple).

Williams also received a posthumous Emmy nomination for Feud while Cephas Jones, a two-time Emmy winner for This Is Us, was also nominated for a Black Reel Award for Genius.

Meanwhile, Emmy-winning Shōgun star Sawai landed an expected nomination in the Actress In a Drama Series CCA category for her role as the tragic Lady Mariko in FX/Hulu’s period drama set in feudal Japan, along with a surprise nomination in the Supporting Actress In a Drama Series field for another period drama set primarily in Japan, Apple TV+’s Pachinko.

Japanese actress Sawai is part of the 1980s timeline of Pachinko whose story spans countries and decades. While her character, Naomi, speaks both Japanese and English, in Season 2, which the nomination is for, she speaks mostly Japanese, making this likely the first instance an actor has received two major American awards nominations for two roles not in the English language.

Pachinko is also nominated in the Foreign Language Series category, which it won in 2023; Shōgun leads the CCA field with six nominations, including Drama Series.
