Gavin Lux has been traded from the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers to the Cincinnati Reds in a bombshell offseason switch, according to reports.
The infielder, 27, has only ever played for the Dodgers in his career, debuting in 2019 and going on to win his first World Series against the Yankees in October.
He had been linked with a move to the Bronx during the offseason, but ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the Cincinnati Reds are now finalizing a deal to acquire him.
As part of the trade, the Dodgers will receive outfield prospect Mike Sirota and a Competitive Balance Round A pick – around No. 37 overall, per Passan.
Lux’s future was in the air after the Dodgers announced the surprise signing of utilityman Hye-seong Kim last week.
Lux was the team’s No 1 prospect in 2020 but missed the entire 2023 season to an ACL tear and struggled defensively during spring training last year.
The Dodgers switched him from shortstop to second base for 2024, but his .251 average and .703 OPS at the plate was markedly different to most of his superstar teammates.
Despite his struggles, he played in 139 games, hitting 10 home runs in the regular season.
During the World Series he had 10 at-bats against the Yankees, forcing three walks as the Dodgers won it in five games.
