The older I get, the more I realise I don’t have to do shit I don’t want to do. And, if King Charles III is anything to go by, it seems that this attitude is only going to grow stronger in the years to come.
On Sunday, the King kicked off his Australian Tour by attending a fancy little luncheon in his honour. Getting up on stage at NSW Parliament House, he gave a swift speech about the fleeting passage of time (poetic) whilst gesturing to an hourglass (also poetic) he was gifted.
Ironically, the King further leant into the whole “fleeting passage of time” bit by leaving the lunch ten minutes later. He straight up Harold Holt-ed out of there, letting the suited lawmakers enjoy the function — which was put on purely for the 75-year-old — without his presence.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but wow, relatable King.
Tragically, the monarch missed out on sampling the chargrilled asparagus with olive dust, marinated octopus with squid ink water, and a main of barramundi and duck confit as he’d hit the frog and toad by the first course.
Let me tell you, if I were the king, I would have absolutely bodied that marinated octopus. To each their own, I guess.
Before the King and his missus Queen Camilla hit the honorary function, they paid a visit to some adoring fans at St Thomas’ Anglican church in North Sydney where they greeted a heap of fans and royal enthusiasts.
In the background, chants of “Always Was, Always will be, Aboriginal land” echoed through the breeze and I think that’s just beautiful. I hope our majesties took note.
The King and Queen are currently in Australia as part of a five-day tour of Sydney and Canberra. Although it seems pretty short, he suspended his cancer treatment to be here so you’ve got to give the old boy some credit.
The pair will spend the next day or so in Canberra, before heading back to Sydney on Tuesday for a BBQ in western Sydney — again, sOooOOo me — and an appearance at the Sydney Opera House. After Australia, they’ll head to Samoa for a meeting of the Commonwealth heads of government.
Hope they can fit in a beach day, or something.
