India’s Hindi studio powerhouse Junglee Pictures is making its first foray into Malayalam-language cinema with “Ronth” (“Night Patrol”), a gritty police drama helmed by award-winning filmmaker Shahi Kabir.
The film, which has wrapped production and is currently in post, stars acclaimed actors Dileesh Pothan (Berlinale selection “Tiger’s Pond”) and Roshan Mathew (Busan winner “Paradise”) as two cops whose night patrol shift becomes a pressure cooker of professional challenges and personal conflicts. The supporting cast includes Sudhi Koppa, Arun Cherukavil, Lakshmi Menon, Krisha Kurup and Nandanunni.
Kabir, who nabbed India’s National Film Award for best screenplay with “Nayattu” (2021), brings his signature blend of social commentary and stark realism to the project. His writing credits include the just released cop drama “Officer on Duty” and thrillers “Ela Veezha Poonchira” (2022), which he also directed, and “Joseph” (2018).
“The moment we heard the narration, we were hooked; it was an easy yes from all of us,” says Junglee Pictures CEO Amrita Pandey. “Shahi’s storytelling, deeply rooted in realism, blends intense narratives with raw human emotions, the kind of cinema we truly believe in.”
For Kabir, partnering with the studio known for Bollywood hits like “Raazi” and “Badhaai Ho” was a natural fit. “I’m thrilled to collaborate with Junglee Pictures, a studio with a strong track record of backing high-concept, rooted films,” the writer-director notes.
The project is co-produced by Festival Cinemas, with Vineet Jain, Ratheesh Ambat, Ranjith E.V.M. and Jojo Jose serving as producers alongside co-producer Amrita Pandey.
The technical crew includes cinematographer Mahesh Madhavan, composer Anil Johnson, and editor Praveen Mangalath. The film is slated for theatrical release later this year.
Junglee Pictures was founded in 2014 as a subsidiary of Indian media conglomerate The Times Group.
