Josiane Balasko, criticized for talking about male prostitution: “The script was thrown at me”

It is no coincidence that Josiane Balasko plays such a role: in 2008, the actress directed her film Customerworn by Nathalie Baye, who dealt with the subject of male prostitution. “In any case, it’s a theme that speaks to me (…) I had a lot of difficulty putting it together at the time, because we found it quite scandalous as a subject, a woman who pays“, she remembered from Provence.

At the time, Marilou Berry’s mother had suffered numerous refusals and criticisms of her project: “Someone threw the script in my face and told me it was shameful to write on such a subject! Many people from cinema and television, men and women alike, had told me this. They didn’t have artistic thinking, it was just moral. My morality seemed questionable to them“.

However, the theme of prostitution has been addressed numerous times on the small and big screen. “How many movies are there about guys who hook up? We no longer count them!“, she said before rejoicing that in 2024, the subject of male prostitution will finally be raised: “That’s good, that means it’s evolving.“.
