Jihadists and allied rebel factions have just taken control of most of Aleppo and its international airport. “We participated in the operation to liberate Aleppo to drive out Iranian militias and Hezbollah militias, and to end the oppression against our brothers in the city of Aleppo”declares a rebel, member of the Maghawir al-Sham group, supported by Turkey.
This lightning offensive was launched on Wednesday November 27 in neighboring provinces, before reaching Aleppo, Syria’s second city. A hard blow for Bashar al-Assad, supported by Russia, Iran and Lebanese Hezbollah. Several countries have expressed their concern about the evolving situation. France notably called on all parties to respect international humanitarian law and protect civilians. Since 2011, war has broken out in Syria against the regime of Bashar al-Assad. These events are the first in many years.
