Jessica Mauboy confirms the birth of her first child with husband Themeli Magriplis…and reveals the baby’s sweet name

Jessica Mauboy has confirmed that she has become a mother for the first time.

The Aussie pop star, 35, broke the happy news that she and husband Themeli Magriplis were the proud parents of a baby girl to Stellar on Saturday.

Jessica also revealed her daughter’s adorable name – Mia.

She revealed that Mia was born back on January 13, but kept her arrival away from he glare of social media to give friends and family the chance to meet her first.

While the singer has yet to reveal images of her newborn she did admit that motherhood had been a ‘rollercoaster’.   

‘It has been a bit of a rollercoaster but a magical one, she told the publication. ‘I’m making up lots of lullabies for her.’

Jessica joked that while she can definitely see herself in her daughter, she was worried that Mia might pick up some of her more negative traits.   

‘I look at her and it’s “whoa!” because I see myself, that little frown,’ she said.

‘I’m not sure I want her to have my personality, because it’s rough and it’s tough.  She’s constantly changing every day, another little roll, another crease.’

Jessica said that she wanted to keep Mia’s arrival private so she would be able to enjoy ‘precious moments’ with her growing family.

‘Am I going to be a good mum? I wanted to hold space for myself,  to be patient and give as much love and kindness to myself as my body was changing,’ she said.

‘Like making a record, you have got to put yourself out there eventually, but it was about having these precious moments with her seen by myself.’

Jessica delighted fans in September after it was announced she was five months pregnant with her first child.

She was spotted attempting to hide her growing baby bump under a thick patterned overcoat as she strolled through Sydney Airport.

The Darwin-born performer tried to go incognito under the baggy multi-coloured coat, which concealed her growing belly.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Jessica and Themeli were expecting in September last year.

In December, Jessica had fans swooning when she took to Instagram to share snaps of herself in a sleek black leather ensemble, attending the ARIA Awards.

Jessica’s cheekily flaunted her growing belly to the camera alongside another performer while rocking a glossy black trench coat paired with matching patent leather jumpsuit, which perfectly highlighted her blossoming belly.

Fans were quick to flood the comments section with praise, applauding Jessica for her stunning appearance and celebrating her exciting journey to motherhood. 

Jessica tied the knot with Themeli in a small Darwin church ceremony in 2022 when she released Flashback, a single from her fifth studio album Yours Forever.

The pair first met in Mauboy’s home town of Darwin, in a nightclub, when she was just 18 through a game of ‘truth or dare’.

‘Whatever love means to you, this song is that,’ she told The Daily Telegraph of the upbeat track.

‘It encapsulates that butterfly feeling from when I literally first laid eyes on him.’

‘It’s a strange thing when you come from a small town that you’re supposed to know of everyone, and I’d never met him. I had that moment of: “Where have you been? Who are you? You’re out of this world”.’

Speaking to The Sunday Project in 2023 about their first meeting, the songstress also recalled the awkward encounter.

‘I was out with my eight girlfriends and we happened to play this game truth or dare and I happened to say ‘dare’,’ she explained.

Jessica didn’t disclose exactly what the dare was, but said she spotted Themeli soon afterwards and revealed she immediately made her way towards him.
