Jerod Mayo’s wife in furious Instagram outburst days after New England Patriots fired her husband

Chantel Mayo, the wife of fired former New England Patriots coach Jerod, has hit out at ‘lies’ over her husband’s abrupt firing on Sunday night.

Mayo was let go by the Patriots hours after a 23-16 win over the Buffalo Bills that saw New England lose the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Since then, reports have emerged over how Mayo struggled in his first season as a head coach, with one report claiming he played cards on a flight home after a loss instead of analyzing tape.

Now, Chantel has taken to Instagram to defend her husband, posting in capital letters on her story: ‘It never even crossed our minds to tell the truth… but I couldn’t fathom all the lies we’ve read that are being told to save face.

‘What happened to the class????? We’ve been taking the high rod and letting everyone do their thing since Sunday.

‘But playing with someone’s name won’t be tolerated. I bet the fake stories will stop before the real ones start…’

Patriots owner Robert Kraft said that firing Mayo was one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do in his time as the head of the franchise.

‘I have known Jerod for 17 years. He earned my respect and admiration as a rookie in 2008 and throughout his career for his play on the field, his leadership in the locker room and the way he conducted himself in our community,’ Kraft said.

‘When he joined our coaching staff, his leadership was even more evident, as I saw how the players responded to him. When other teams started requesting to interview him, I feared I would lose him and committed to making him our next head coach.

‘Winning our season-opener on the road at Cincinnati only strengthened my convictions. Unfortunately, the trajectory of our team’s performances throughout the season did not ascend as I had hope.’

The Patriots finished the season with a 4-13 record and Mike Vrabel is among the favorites to replace Mayo.

But the organization also announced they had interviews Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson on Friday – the last of their scheduled interviews.

It’s an appealing job, even with the team enduring an awful season. Quarterback Drake Maye, drafted last year, impressed throughout his rookie campaign and made it certain that whatever the future holds for the Patriots, he must be the starter.

It means that with the fourth pick of this year’s NFL Draft, the Patriots can pick a player to compliment Maye, rather than a quarterback to reshape the franchise.
