Jamie Carragher tells Ruben Amorim to IGNORE his Man United players over whether Ruud van Nistelrooy keeps a job when he takes over, after caretaker’s impassioned plea to stay on
Jamie Carragher has claimed Ruben Amorim must make his own decision over whether to keep Ruud van Nistelrooy at Manchester United.
Amorim, 39, was confirmed as United’s new boss last Friday, but he won’t start work until Monday, November 11.
The Portuguese coach – who will take over a United team who have been badly struggling this season – is set to bring several of his trusted staff members with him, meaning the futures of Van Nistelrooy and fellow assistant Rene Hake are uncertain.
In fact, interim boss Van Nistelrooy gave an impassioned plea to stay on last week and insisted he plans to see out his two-year contract.
And, according to Sky Sports, United’s players want the former United striker to stay on and act as a ‘connector’ between the new staff and the squad after appreciating his communication skills in recent weeks.

But, Amorim is set to bring a group of staff with him, meaning Van Nistelrooy’s future is unclear
However, Carragher insisted that Amorim has to ignore these pleas from the squad and do what he thinks is best, even if it upsets his players.
‘I don’t think the players should have any say in a matter like this,’ he said on Monday Night Football.
‘Especially after the performances they’ve had in recent years. If it was a highly successful team, if there was a lot of respect for the players in the dressing room and their opinion mattered, then it would be something that would be taken into consideration.
‘You don’t allow players to start calling the shots, especially Manchester United players.’
However, Carragher did go onto say that Van Nistelrooy’s presence may actually be helpful for the 39-year-old upon his arrival.
‘I’m sure that Ruben Amorim will bring his own team from Sporting,’ he added.
‘But if he feels he needs a connection, someone who knows Manchester United, the team, who has been there in the last few weeks… he can ask him to stay until the end of the season.’
Speaking last week – and before Amorim was appointed – Van Nistelrooy had outlined that his plan was to return to his role as assistant after his interim tenure was over.
‘It’s going to be short job as an interim – that was communicated very clearly, and I was happy with that,’ he said before the weekend’s draw with Chelsea.
‘I decided to come back here for a very important reason: that I am here as an assistant, I came here to help the club forward and I am still very motivated to do so in any capacity, as an assistant and now an interim.
‘After this I go back to my assistant contract I have here for this season and next. I am very motivated to stay here and help the club forward.
‘We will see but it is the contract situation I am in, and my desire to help the club forward.

‘I can speak to you about my side of the story and after the when the new manager is signing and conversations take place, we have to see how things develop.
‘I want to help, I want to do everything I can in my abilities. The club is in a difficult situation and it is not where we all want it to be.
‘Everyone is looking at Manchester United, but it is us as people on the ground to do the utmost, supported by fans and it is a process.’
Van Nistelrooy has one win and a draw so far, with the Dutchman set to lead the Red Devils against PAOK in the Europa League this Thursday before his final game in charge comes at home to Leicester on Sunday.
