Israel Captures Additional Areas in Buffer Zone Along Syrian Border
Cairo: Hani Kamal El-Din
Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz announced today that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had successfully seized control of additional areas within the buffer zone on the border with Syria during an overnight operation. The statement was reported by the Israeli news portal Ynet.
Strategic Moves to Secure Israel’s Borders
According to Katz, the IDF was directed to act immediately in Syrian territory to establish a security zone free of strategic weapons and hostile infrastructure that could pose a threat to Israel. The directive aims to ensure that no heavy weaponry or terrorist networks remain operational in the region.
The minister emphasized that Israel will no longer tolerate the smuggling of weapons from Iran to Lebanon through Syria, particularly at border crossings. Katz further stressed that the military was instructed to take decisive action to neutralize strategic weapon systems within Syrian territory. These systems include ground-based missiles, air defense systems, surface-to-surface missiles, cruise missiles, and long-range projectiles.
Unprecedented Military Action in Syria
Over the weekend, the Israeli military crossed into Syrian territory beyond the Golan Heights for the first time in more than 50 years. On December 8, the IDF took control of the Syrian side of Mount Hermon in the Golan Heights, reportedly without encountering significant resistance. Israel claims the southern slopes of Mount Hermon as part of its sovereign territory.
A Broader Security Agenda
This operation is part of a broader Israeli strategy aimed at enhancing its national security and countering perceived threats from Iran and Hezbollah. Katz emphasized that these military actions are designed to prevent Syria from becoming a conduit for weapons that endanger Israel’s safety.
Implications for the Region
The developments mark a significant escalation in Israel’s activities in Syria, underscoring its commitment to establishing a buffer zone along its northern border. While Israel frames its actions as defensive, they add complexity to the regional dynamics and risk triggering broader confrontations.
Observers will closely monitor the evolving situation, as tensions along the Syrian-Israeli border carry the potential for far-reaching consequences beyond the immediate area.
