Infectious disease specialist: Omicron is especially dangerous for young children

Andrei Pozdnyakov, an infectious disease doctor, said that the Omicron coronavirus strain is more dangerous for young children.

According to the doctor, this type of virus can cause serious complications in children, and children are often hospitalized with omicron.

“This strain easily multiplies in the bronchi and worsens in the lungs … For adults, this is rather good, because for them bronchitis is unpleasant, but it is not fatal, unlike pneumonia. With children, especially young children, the situation is the opposite: Due to their age-related anatomical and functional features, bronchitis often leads to serious complications.”

According to him, this is due to the fact that in a growing child, the bronchi are not completely formed – the smaller the child, the narrower the lumen of the bronchi and the greater the risk of its being compromised.
