India eager to work with UAE for defence co-production and co-development: Rajnath Singh

India is eager to work closely with the UAE for coproduction and codevelopment of weapon systems and is keen to combine resources for innovation of future technologies, defence minister Rajnath Singh told crown prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is also the deputy PM and defence minister of UAE.

In a meeting at South Block, the two ministers exchanged views on regional and global security and took a review of current defence cooperation through institutional mechanisms, military exercises and training programmes. Officials said that training exchanges have been identified as a key area of defence cooperation.

After the meeting, Singh said defence cooperation with the UAE is set to increase in the near future.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held discussions with Sheikh Hamdan. Modi said Dubai has been instrumental in advancing the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Sheikh Hamdan expressed his enthusiasm for the continued development of UAE-India relations.

He also met commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal.
