For its 2024 festival, Body Movements left behind east London’s Hackney Wick for the sprawling greens of Southwark Park in the city’s south. “We were dreaming of a space that we could call our own,” said the collective on Instagram before the location was revealed. “Safe and sheltered, but vast and open, a space where queer expression could strive.”
On the day, that expression was telegraphed through the playful and evocative style of its thousands-strong crowd. Attendees opted for lace leotards and Marie Antoinette-style beehives, conical leather bras over white shirts, and carnivalesque headdresses with crocheted body stockings. On stage, things were similarly wild, with performers in Mugler catsuits and imposing black sunnies, athletic twin sets and leather boxing boots, plus little black bloomers and faux-fur stiletto boots.
Elsewhere, others took a more laid-back approach to festival fashion, while still within the realms of 2020s queer style. Those long denim jorts everyone loves to wear made several appearances across the festival, as did slogan tank tops and printed, sheer mesh. But on the more adventurous side, one festival goer arrived at the south London location with disco ball nipple pasties and a green beret, while an entire troupe of performers came decked out in blood red corsets, BDSM-wear and fishnet stockings galore.
