I sent one text to a girl I’ve been dating and ruined everything

Dating in the modern era is a minefield of mixed signals, unread messages, and unspoken rules – where young Australians frequently struggle with finding suitable partners.

A 25-year-old man recently shared his woes online after a simple text about celebrating his one-month anniversary with his girlfriend turned into the beginning of the end.

The man had been dating a 22-year-old woman for two months, officially together for one, when he sent what he thought was a harmless message on a Wednesday. He then sent a rude follow-up that turned out to be the nail in his coffin.

‘Our one-month is on Sunday so it’d be cool to do a little something that week, not on Sunday obviously because you’re busy but yeah,’ he wrote.

His girlfriend left him on read until Friday, finally responding on Saturday only after he sent an impolite follow-up text saying: ‘Just figured for you it’s a big milestone considering you saying your longest relationship was only 20 minutes. Congrats on actually being able to keep someone’s interest for a month dummy [sic].’

Despite the lack of response earlier, she finally agreed to meet him on Monday which gave him hope.

But when they finally saw each other in person, she ended things on the spot.

The man shared on Reddit that she initially tried to leave without giving him a reason, but he insisted.

Her response was blunt: ‘I just don’t like you.’

She then added that she was ‘probably a lesbian’ and ‘doesn’t really want a relationship right now anyway’, dismissing him entirely before walking away.

For the heartbroken man, the break up was a shock, but quickly realised it may have been for the best.

The story has struck a nerve with many, as dating in today’s world has become more about playing it cool than being vulnerable.

It also shows how fragile egos can be in the current climate – and how easily seemingly happy situations can spiral due to rash behaviour.

Many young singles find themselves navigating unwritten rules that encourage detachment, ghosting, and emotional games.

With trends like breadcrumbing (stringing someone along with minimal effort) and ‘situationships’ (undefined romantic entanglements), it’s no wonder genuine connection feels harder than ever.

Many shared their thoughts on the Reddit poster’s situation.

‘I’ve never seen a girl seem so uninterested, please go find someone that will actually make you feel good,’ one said.

‘Why would you send a message about your one month? Don’t ever say anything like that to another girl you date, it sounds so corny.’
