How to wear the purple blush trend in 2024

In recent years, it seems as if we collectively rediscovered the power of a good blush. Gone are the days of the heavy-handed bronzer application that reigned supreme in the 2000s.  Today, blush is receiving its flowers as the humble makeup bag essential that has the power to transform your complexion from lacklustre to luminous, bringing a youthful flush to your skin with just a few dabs on the cheek.

If you’re anything like me, your introduction to blush was likely via the NARS shade ‘Orgasm’, which had the internet in a chokehold until about a decade ago. While I’ve since moved on to different formulations, the shade has stuck with me, and, as a result, I rarely stray from classic rosey pinks and coral hues when adding a touch of colour to my makeup. Thanks to TikTok and its bounty of creators dedicated to testing new makeup, however, I was recently introduced to a different blush shade. Purple blush is currently storming the app, sold as a universally-flattering alternative to classic rouge. I’ll admit, I was slightly intimidated by the bold pigment. Video after video on my FYP however, showed that, on application, purple blush disperses into the healthiest your-skin-but-better flush — the kind that comes from a brisk walk, or perhaps a visit to pilates.

Most makeup artists are in agreement that the reason purple blush looks so delicious on the skin is the result of basic colour theory. Purple is directly opposite yellow on the colour wheel, meaning true purple shades work particularly well on those with olive undertones. For those with cooler complexions, look for a purple that leans a little more blue, to avoid bringing out the pink in your skin tone.

As more and more beauty devotees commit to purple as the blush colour of the moment, makeup brands aren’t far behind, with an uptick in formulas that glisten like a plump cherry. Even better, there’s a myriad variations to the colour, from iridescent lilacs to deep mauves, making finding a shade to compliment your complexion a breeze.
