how fake prescriptions enable drug trafficking

Pharmacists are finding it increasingly difficult to identify very realistic false prescriptions. Drug trafficking linked to false prescriptions increased by 36% last year according to Health Insurance. On Telegram, traffickers promise to buy back 200 euros for a box of medicine. The volunteers, often young, are tasked with going to the pharmacy with their fake prescription and their health card and collecting these boxes worth thousands of euros, covered by Social Security. These drugs are mostly exported and resold abroad.

This summer, Health Insurance launched a database which lists false prescriptions. “In 2023, we detected a little more than 11.5 million euros in damage”explains Marc Scholler, director of the fight against fraud at Health Insurance. Another measure: a secure prescription with a watermark, as for bank notes.
