How Demi consoled herself after Oscars snub… the stars causing a ‘scene’ at Vanity Fair… and who was kicked off Jay-Z’s guest list: ALISON BOSHOFF spills all the gossip

Everyone went to the Vanity Fair party after the Oscars, of course – and the focus on having a good time was such that everyone was also perfectly happy to ignore the 3.9 magnitude earthquake which hit LA just as the parties were getting going around 10.13pm on Sunday night.

The Wallis Annenberg Center, home to the magazine’s shindig, shook – but nobody turned a hair.

The famous crowd was too busy discussing Demi Moore’s ice-cold reaction to not winning the expected Best Actress statue. And wondering where she had got to.

Lipreaders suggest that Moore had a one-word response to losing out to Mikey Madison – ‘nice’.

Friends said she headed off to a party in Coldwater Canyon thrown by Madonna and Moore’s old friend Guy Oseary, Madonna’s manager, rather than going to Vanity Fair or even the party thrown by Neon, the film company that backed her movie The Substance.

The Madonna party – always a tough nut in a town of party-crashers – closed its doors around 2am.

The Neon party, meanwhile, was held in Soho House and was a noisy and not very starry affair, with catering which ran to pizza that one guest told me was ‘disgusting’. Celebrities were not in evidence.

Disappointed Demi has been friends with Guy Oseary for decades – she is the godmother to his 18-year-old son Oliver – and it is the one safe space for her away from prying eyes on a night which brought her unexpected and sharp disappointment.

She sat at the awards with old friend, florist and perfumer Eric Buterbaugh, and has also been leaning on daughter Scout, 33, in recent days.

Demi had been a favorite to win an Oscar for her performance in the body-horror The Substance but although the movie did pick up an award for hair and makeup, she lost out to Mikey Madison of Anora in the best actress category.

On the night before the Oscars she said that she was planning to spend a few days in her pajamas after the awards campaign was over – and truly who could blame her if she does?

The starriest night in the Hollywood calendar unfolded in its customary unpredictable way. Monica Lewinsky, the intern who nearly brought down Bill Clinton, looked impossibly slender and glossy at Vanity Fair, alongside Kim Kardashian in a strapless cream Balenciaga dress and Olivia Wilde, the actress, director and ex girlfriend of Harry Styles, who was wearing a diaphanous slip and big knickers.

Actors including Oscar winners Madison and Adrien Brody came and left the party, according to a friend there. Only Brody was hanging out for any length of time, others seemed to just tick the party as one stop off their list and move on.

Guests were served In-n-Out burgers and enjoyed a custom gelato cart and touch-ups at a L’Oreal make up station.

There was a bit of a ‘scene’ outside where some guests gathered to smoke cigarettes. A subdued-looking Timothee Chalamet, with girlfriend Kylie Jenner, was in the crowd.

As was Mick Jagger, 81, who was attached to 37-year-old girlfriend Melanie Hamrick. He seemed happier than he has in years and was keen to chat with everyone – from bombshell actress Sydney Sweeney to Amazon boss Jeff Bezos inside. Perhaps the Rolling Stone is thinking of returning his focus to his film company, Jagged Films.

Or maybe he is just happier domestically than he has been in years – certainly nobody can remember him being quite so fizzing and quite so demonstrative with any of his many former squeezes.

Madison chatted about her future plans while at Vanity Fair.

‘For lack of a better word this is just incredibly surreal. I never thought that this would happen. It’s my life time dream of being an actress and being in film. It’s a huge honor and one that will soak in further down the line I hope. I really did not expect it at all,’ she said.

‘Tonight I will go home to my new puppies and probably need to clean up their mess and that will probably bring me right back down to earth.’

Across town Netflix boss Bela Bajaria, looking beautiful in red, grooved to Prince at her party at the Chateau Marmont. That bash was attended by actors Matt Smith and Chistina Hendricks and, intriguingly, by Bond boss Barbara Broccoli.

Broccoli has just sold the creative control of the character to rival streamer Amazon, and was rather a surprise figure at the bash. She was among friends but didn’t talk to Bajaria or to co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

At the Netflix party, guests were invited to shed their shoes and swap them for comfortable fur-lined sliders at a Shoe Valet – an option which was even more popular than their mini burgers.

The Netflix party, smaller than Vanity Fair and less corporate in feel, attracted guests who wanted to linger for hours over Martinis and sushi, cake pops and cinnamon cookies.

Wallace and Gromit star Nick Park was here, for a time, as was Emilia Perez star Karla Sofia Gascon who showed up with a small entourage after exiting the Governor’s Ball, the official post-Oscars party.

It was rather a surprise to see her: Gascon had been cast out by Netflix after the emergence of old, apparently racist, tweets. But she and Netflix have evidently made up enough for her to attend the party – although she didn’t chat with the top execs.

Nor did she interact in any way at all with co-star Zoe Saldana, who won a supporting actress Oscar for the film, but stated clearly a few weeks ago that she has no truck with ‘intolerance’. Saldana’s showing was pretty much blink and you miss it.

There was no sign of Meghan Markle, who had been rumored to attend, given her Netflix show With Love, Meghan premieres on Tuesday.

Meanwhile also at the Chateau – but in the parking garage across the way – the Jay-Z party started to swing after midnight.

Inside their fabled Gold Party, Jay -Z and his wife Beyoncé were ‘very affectionate’ with each other. Beyoncé apparently had been deeply upset by the death this weekend of the singer Angie Stone in a car wreck.

A source said: ‘Jay proposed a toast celebrating the end of a difficult year and thanked Beyoncé for sticking by him through it all and announced that he is working on a new album.’

He’s had his own troubles of course, having been briefly dragged into the P Diddy sex scandal although all allegations are now withdrawn.

Diddy’s adult children used to be a part of the night but have been quietly left off the guest list this year.
