A man has been shot dead in the carpark of a regional hospital.

Police said they ‘engaged’ with a man in the carpark of the Manning Base Hospital in Taree in the NSW mid-north coast at about 12.55pm on Thursday.

‘During the engagement, the man allegedly pointed a firearm at the attending officers, and he was shot by police,’ the police statement said.

‘Officers immediately rendered assistance to the man prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

‘The man – believed to be aged in his 30s – was taken into the Manning Base Hospital where he died a short time later.’

Thirty minutes before the shooting, the police were called to Rouse St, at Wingham, following reports a man had fired shots into the air.
