A recorded prison phone call has led to the grim discovery of a baby’s foetus inside a freezer in Sydney’s inner-west.
Corrective services staff intercepted the call between an inmate and a woman on the outside speaking about the remains being stored in a bag in a freezer at a Marrickville home.
Prison officers alerted NSW Police, who raided the home last Thursday following inquiries.
‘After executing a warrant at the home, detectives located a bag in the freezer containing what is believed to be a foetus,’ a police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.
‘A crime scene was established, and the foetus was taken to Glebe Morgue for further examination.’
The Frazer Street home where the remains were found is understood not to be that of the baby’s mother.
‘Following examination, police have been advised the foetus is less than 20 weeks gestation,’ the spokesperson added.
Strike Force Canfield was launched to investigate the incident.

as the foetus was still in the first trimester, inquiries are now centred around supporting the baby’s mother.
‘(There is) no further police investigation (and) the appropriate referrals (are) being made,’ the spokesperson said.
The investigation is understood to be looking at a possible link between the foetus found in Marrickville and the discovery of an umbilical cord and placenta last May.
That find, by a dog walker at the Cooks River in Earlwood, was later determined by forensic testing to be from a boy.
The location where the placenta was found is just 3km from where the foetus was found in Marrickville.
Nor the mother or baby from the Earlwood case have ever been identified, despite police launching multiple public appeals for information.
