Suspected human bones have been found in a popular national park, sparking a wider search of the area.
A hiker stumbled upon the gruesome discovery in the Springbrook National Park in the Gold Coast hinterland in Queensland around 11.35am on Friday.
A crime scene was set up at Repeater Station Road as an investigation got underway, Queensland Police confirmed on Saturday.
‘Investigations are underway into the circumstances,’ police said.
‘Searches are occurring in the area today.’
The Gold Coast Bulletin initially reported a human skull had been found.
Springbrook National Park is about an hour’s drive west of the Gold Coast and is popular with tourists and bushwalkers for its spectacular waterfalls, rainforest and ancient trees.
Covering 6,197 hectares, the park is part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia.
