Remember when makeup artist Pat McGrath went viral for creating glass skin on the Maison Margiela runway? One year on, she’s released a glass skin mask, the Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Artistry Mask, so we can recreate the look at home.
The magic makeup moment happened at the Maison Margiela 2024 Artisanal collection, where McGrath collaborated with John Galliano, transforming his fleet of models into porcelain dolls. The interest was immediate: how did she do it? How did McGrath create the hyper-glassy skin finish? She is one of, if not the best makeup artist in the world, so if anyone could achieve such a look, it’s her. But still, the moment viral, reigniting an infatuation with runway beauty.
McGrath did eventually explain how she did it (masterful layers of water and face masks) and it was subsequently recreated around the world. She also teased that she was working on something in that world, a product we now know to be the Glass 001 Artistry Mask.
Where can you buy the Skin Fetish: Glass 001 Artistry Mask?
Now live on McGrath’s website, the mask is described as a peel-off formula that gives the skin a shiny, lacquered appearance. It’s designed to be applied in thin layers, building up to an ethereal shine. According to McGrath, it’s best applied with a brush, allowing each layer to dry before moving onto the next. You can paint it onto bare skin, or on top of a dramatic makeup look, as McGrath did at Margiela. It’s also enriched with glycerin and rose water for hydration.
