SIKESTON, Mo. (KFVS) – While overall inflation is cooling, the cost of food is making it difficult for at least one Heartland group to carry out its mission.
According to the latest consumer price index, prices at the grocery store were up 1.3% compared to last year.
The Oaks Nutrition Center in Sikeston serves up a balanced meal to senior citizens each day.
The center’s administrator, Lisa Hicks said they’re upping funding efforts to offset higher food prices.
‘It’s becoming a big problem for us and every Senior Center out there,” said Hicks.
Hicks said since the cost began to rise, they’ve tried to get creative with fundraising. They are set to hold a trivia night on Saturday, October 26 to benefit the center.
“As well as doing garage sales raffles, I’m pretty much up for trying anything,” said Hicks. “We get money from local organizations donated to U.S. civic groups, faith groups, and veterans groups, which are extremely helpful, but we’re a small town with a whole lot of people doing a whole lot of good things.”
Hicks is hopeful that despite the higher cost of food, they’ll continue to lend a hand to those in need.
“Just trying to make sure that we’re there for them and helping them in any way we can,” said Hicks.
