He may have just stepped down as England cricket captain… but Jos Buttler has already caught a new role – as a pub landlord

After recently stepping down as England cricket captain, Jos Buttler MBE has revealed he will soon be found behind a bar instead of in front of the stumps.

The cricket star has revealed he is becoming a pub landlord in London’s trendy Chelsea, alongside a roster of sporting legends.

Buttler is one of six cricketing star owners, including former England cricket captain Eoin Morgan, South Africa’s former cricket captain Graeme Smith, England’s head cricket coach Brendon McCullum, England cricketer Sam Billings, and Ireland cricketer Paul Stirling, behind the new venture.

But the pub, which opened this week, is not exclusively owned by superstar cricketers: there is also one stellar rugby player owner: former England captain, Jamie George, who is the most-capped hooker of all time and last week made his 100th appearance for his country against Italy.

Together they have bought Chelsea institution The Jam Tree on the King’s Road, a stone’s throw from Chelsea Football Club at Stamford Bridge.

‘It’s a traditional sports pub called The Boundary,’ Buttler, who has captained England’s white-ball team for over two years until the team were knocked out of the Champions Trophy by Afghanistan, exclusively told the Mail on Sunday.

‘All of us are keen to have a chair in the corner where we sit when we come to the pub,’ he added, confirming that drinkers can expect the pub’s celebrity owners to ‘pull pints behind the bar’ as well as host Q and As and pub quizzes.

The Boundary will show the major sporting events in the worlds of cricket, football, rugby – including the current rugby league Six Nations – and horse racing.

The pub will undoubtedly draw in a football crowd – ‘It’s just down the road from Stanford Bridge so hopefully there will be lots of foot traffic,’ Joss says, referencing the Chelsea football fans who will be hungry for post-match pints.

And, of course, The Barmy Army, England cricket’s die-hard fans who follow the team across the world, will join the punters at the Chelsea pub. ‘I’m sure the Barmy Army can sink a few pints so we’ll need them’

Nevertheless, there will be plenty of cricket fans enjoying The Boundary’s outdoor terrace, which features a large TV screen for matches, the plethora of beers on tap – including Buttler’s favourite tipple, the Japanese beer Asahi – and draught Guinness. ‘There are some Irish owners so they are striving to have the best Guinness in London,’ Buttler adds.

Which celebrity owner can hold their drink the best? ‘I wouldn’t win that competition,’ he adds, saying Eoin Morgan is ‘pretty good’ and Brendan McCullin is ‘pretty solid.’

Buttler is aware that there are many celebrity rivals who own pubs – including James Blunt’s nearby The Fox and Pheasant (‘we won’t have as good karaoke nights’, he conceded of the popstar’s pub) and further afield, Nottingham’s The Tap & Run and The Griffin in Leicester, the pubs owned by former England cricketers Stuart Broad and Harry Gurney. ‘There’s a lot of competition,’ Buttler says. ‘But ours is going to be better.’

Has Broad given Buttler any tips? ‘He hasn’t actually,’ he laughs. ‘Perhaps he’s keeping us at arm’s length. We need to get him down and he can show us the ropes.’

Buttler, who said he hopes he will still be playing for England after stepping down as captain, said The Boundary will be a hotspot for fans:

‘When England plays, we’ll be telling all the fans to only come to The Boundary – nowhere else. You’ve got to come to us.’
