Poorna Jagannathan has been cast in a recurring role in the upcoming HBO series “Lanterns,” Variety has confirmed.
The show is based on DC’s “Green Lantern” comics. Jagannathan joins previously announced series leads Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the series, as well as cast members Kelly Macdonald and Garret Dillahunt.
Per the official logline, the show follows “new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Jagannathan will play Zoe, who is described as “effortlessly confident and poised in any setting, even those where she stands out. She is every bit as composed and cunning of the influential men around her.”
Jagannathan previously starred in the HBO limited series “The Night Of” in the role of Safar Khan. In TV, she is also known for her role in the Netflix comedy “Never Have I Ever” and will appear in the upcoming Onyx Collective series “Deli Boys” at Hulu. In film, she recently starred in “Wolfs” opposite George Clooney and Brad Pitt as well as features like “Turtles All the Way Down,” “Mile 22,” and “The Circle.”
She is repped by Gersh, Untitled, and Hansen Jacobson.
The show is produced by HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. It was picked up for eight episodes at HBO in June. Originally intended as a Max original, the show shifted to HBO as part of a new content delineation plan.
“Lanterns” is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King. All three serve as executive producers along with James Hawes, with Hawes also directing the first two episodes.
