Harry Kane slammed for ‘very poor’ Champions League performance for Bayern Munich against PSG – as Dietmar Hamann questions his England future and record at elite level

Harry Kane has once again been denounced by his chief critic, former Bayern Munich and Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann.

Hamann labelled Kane ‘very poor’ for his showing in Bayern’s 1-0 Champions League win over PSG and questioned his future at the elite level.

Kane has already hit 20 goals in 18 games this season and is one of the Champions League’s most prolific men with five goals in as many outings.

His haul of 14 Bundesliga goals is second only to Robert Lewandowski’s 15 at Barcelona in Europe’s top five leagues – but that’s still not enough for Hamann.

‘I went to the game yesterday and I’ve got to say he was very poor, I don’t think he had a shot on target and he pretty much played the same way yesterday as he did at the Euros for England,’ Hamann told talkSPORT.

‘I think the jury is still out on whether he’s got it against the best teams – because he didn’t do it for England.

‘I watched him against Ireland last week and he was poor. He played a wonder ball for the penalty but honestly, that’s not enough for an England captain.

‘The World Cup is about 18, 19, 20 months away. Will he be the player or the captain to lead the line for England?’

Having won five trophies at Bayern, including two Bundesliga titles in 1994 and 1997, Hamann is entitled to his opinion on the German giants and regularly harps up about their shortcomings.

In October he blasted Kane for going missing in big games, saying: ‘I said after the European Championship in the summer that he still has to prove that he is worth the 100 million – even though he scored over 30 goals last year.

‘He wasn’t brought in to score a hat-trick against Darmstadt. He was brought in to score against Leverkusen and Aston Villa and to score in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. He hasn’t done that yet. I remain skeptical about the star striker.’

Kane scored 10 goals in 12 Champions League appearances for Bayern last season as the German giants reached the semi-finals before losing to Real Madrid.

Despite Kane ending the 2023-24 campaign with 43 goals in 44 matches across all competitions, Bayern failed to win a trophy for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

Kane is still yet to win a team trophy during his senior career – but it’s not for want of scoring. All in all he has now hit 429 goals.
