Greece demands compensation for the mechanism to reduce gas consumption

Greece offers the European Commission a mechanism to reduce gas consumption, in exchange for a claim to compensate the savings.

“The central idea of the Greek Prime Minister’s proposal is to create a pan-European mechanism to reduce gas consumption in the industry in exchange for compensation. The goal is to give Europe the opportunity to face the losses that would arise in the event of a halt in gas supplies from Russia”, wrote Kathimerini newspaper.

The European Commission obliged EU countries to submit a plan by the end of September for a voluntary cut in gas consumption by 15% until March 31, 2023. A number of European countries did not support this initiative, including Spain, Portugal, Italy, Poland and Hungary.

Earlier, El País newspaper reported that the EU’s energy-saving measures threaten a dangerous split within the bloc.
