Gerwyn Price’s wife breaks down in tears after his dramatic sudden-death leg win over Joe Cullen at the Darts World Championship – as former world champion reaches the last 16 despite squandering an initial three-set lead
Gerwyn Price’s wife broke down in tears after he claimed a dramatic win over Joe Cullen in the Darts World Championship.
Price looked set to cruise to a comfortable win when he took a 3-0 lead in Friday’s first evening game at Alexandra Palace.
However, Cullen dramatically clawed his way back by winning the next three sets in dramatic fashion.
He landed a ‘Big Fish’ 170 checkout to send the tie to a sudden-death leg on his throw but Price hit some big numbers to steal victory.
And the latter cut an emotional figure afterwards while his wife Bethan Palmer was seen wiping away tears.
Price told Sky Sports: ‘That was tough. I just wanted to get over the wining line, every single set he kept coming back into it. The crowd were behind him. I actually thought I was going to lose it but I stayed in it and got over the line.

The 39-year-old cut an emotional figure as he booked a spot in the last-16 of the Darts World Championship
‘He played some good darts at the right times. I don’t know honestly, I was missing doubles and I’m just looking round thinking “wow, how am I in this position?”. I put myself in them positions but I got myself out of it and thankfully got the win.
‘I kept breaking in the final set and couldn’t hold on my throw. I probably wanted it too much and was trying too hard.
‘I’ve got a lot more in the tank. I can play a lot better than I have tonight. I didn’t play brilliantly but I did enough to win in the end.
‘Alexandra Palace is not the best of places for me but to get a win any day of the week means a lot to me.’
Price is now set to take on Jonny Clayton in the round of 16 as he looks to improve on last year when he was knocked out in the third round of the competition by Brendan Dolan.
