former leaders accused of “irresponsibility”

Bruno Le Maire, Gabriel Attal, Élisabeth Borne and Thomas Cazenave have been questioned in recent weeks by senators. Objective: understand how the deficit could have slipped by 50 billion euros over the past year. Today, the rapporteurs’ conclusions are scathing. “We feel very clearly the general feeling of collective denial about the situation of public finances to which is now added a feeling of irresponsibility of those who were in government at the time”concludes Jean-François Hussan, LR general budget rapporteur in the Senate.

A response from the former ministers implicated did not take long. “This is an incriminating report. It does not help to understand why we lost revenue and deteriorated the situation of public finances”denounces the former Minister of Public Accounts.

It all started less than a year ago. From December 2023, a note from Bercy warns of a first slippage in the deficit. Bruno Le Maire alerted the Prime Minister at the time, Élisabeth Borne, and warned a month later. However, despite a change of Prime Minister and attempts to slow down, the deficit continues to widen.
