Football fans claim the ‘game’s officially GONE’ as FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirms next year’s World Cup final will have a Super Bowl-style half-time show

Fans have reacted furiously to the news that there will be a Super Bowl-style half-time show during next year’s World Cup final.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed the decision on Wednesday morning, with Coldplay set to be in charge of choosing the performers.

A half-time show has been a major part of the Super Bowl for years, with the headline act being given approximately 13 minutes to perform their biggest hits.

US rapper Kendrick Lamar stole the show at last month’s showpiece event, and used his platform to bring his long-running feud with fellow musician Drake back into the spotlight.

Now, football is set to try out its own half-time show and will do so on the biggest stage, but many fans are far from convinced that it is a good idea.

‘Game’s officially gone,’ claimed one supporter as they took to X to protest the announcement.

‘Utter woke nonsense,’ another fumed.

Concerns have also been raised that the length of the half-time show could interrupt the flow of the match and take away from the overall spectacle.

‘If it lasts longer than 15 minutes it’s a disgrace,’ one disgruntled fan posted.

Some fans have also expressed fears about what could happen next, with one raising the prospect of Premier League matches being played in the US to further appease the American audience.

‘The game we once loved is being ruined. Next we will play Premier League games in the US on a permanent basis,’ they wrote.

Another fan added: ‘Football really is in the gutter these days, it’s been destroyed in every single way.’

Musical acts have performed at major football matches – such as the Champions League final – before, but they have taken to the stage prior to kick-off.

Rock icon Lenny Kravitz went through his back catalogue before last year’s final between Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

The time slot is set to switch to half-time at this year’s final, with American rockers Linkin Park due to perform in Munich on May 31.

The same idea will then be tested at the 2026 World Cup, but it has not gone down well with the majority of fans.
