North West made an appearance in the new music video for FKA Twigs’ song “Childlike Things” and it’s… interesting, to say the least.
In case you missed a chapter, the directionally named nepo baby was revealed as a featured artist on Twigs’ latest album Eusexua, which was released in January.
North’s appearance on the album — which sees her deliver a rap verse in which she “praises God” from “California to Tokyo” — already had eyebrows raised, but those brows are now in the stratosphere with the release of the accompanying music video.
In the eight-minute clip, directed by Jordan Hemingway, Twigs is seen enlisting North to help win over music executives who, in a bizarre twist, are played by TikTok star and podcaster Jake Shane and movie director Kevin Smith.
When the pair say Twigs needs to “hoop up with a rapper” in order “to get on Spotify’s discover page”, the singer does one better, by introducing the daughter of an infamously disgraced one.
“Welcome to the stage the sartorial goddess, the raspy voice troublemaker and truth teller, producer and rapper extraordinaire. The one, the only, North West,” Twigs says, as if she were introducing the Queen of Sheba herself.
It’s all very meta, and while Shane and Smith’s characters are impressed with the pair’s performance, they still tell Twigs she needs to promote the track with “short-form stuff… and get it up on all the socials”.
Given the engagement (and controversy) it attracts, I reckon North’s own TikTok would be their best bet.
It’s not the first time North has attracted attention with a music collaboration.
Earlier this month, her father, Kanye West (who, for the record, needs to throw his phone in the ocean), took to social media to drop a new song that featured both North and… Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs?
The track, titled “Lonely Roads Still Go to Sunshine”, opens with a phone call between Kanye and Combs, who is currently facing too many disgraceful charges to name.
North is heard delivering the hook on that song, which was reportedly slammed by her mother and Kanye’s ex, Kim Kardashian.
Optics-wise, I’d say North is better off collaborating with Twigs than Combs — but hey, I’m not a music exec like Shane.
