Since the Second World War, many alliances have been formed and dissolved, but one intelligence pact has stood the test of time and given the U.S. a strategic edge over its adversaries – the Five Eyes. Meanwhile, France has confirmed it will continue sharing intelligence with Ukraine. However, for Britain, one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters, doing so may be challenging due to the constraints of the Five Eyes alliance.
What is the ‘Five Eyes’ Alliance?
The Five Eyes alliance comprises the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. It originated from a secret World War II collaboration between British and U.S. code-breaking teams.
- In 1946, Britain and the U.S. signed a signals intelligence agreement, which later expanded to include the other three nations.
- The alliance facilitates intelligence-sharing across national security, law enforcement, and global threat assessments.
- Members regard it as the world’s most significant intelligence-sharing pact, operating on a foundation of deep trust.
- While there is an expectation to share all signals intelligence, nations retain the right to withhold or act independently when needed.
Canada’s potential removal from Five Eyes?
Last month, reports emerged that White House official Peter Navarro was pushing for Canada’s expulsion from the alliance, according to a report by the Financial Times. Navarro, a close advisor to Donald Trump, has easy access to the Oval Office and has been vocal about his concerns regarding Canada’s role in the group. The discussion about Canada’s position within Five Eyes is reportedly gaining traction within the Trump administration.
