CONTENT WARNING: This article discusses Suicide.
On this episode of ‘can we fucking not’, gross men are being rightfully (and unsurprisingly) dragged after cracking putrid jokes surrounding the death of Aubrey Plaza‘s husband, Jeff Baena.
On Sunday (Aus time), tragedy struck the world of film after it was confirmed that Jeff Baena, the genius behind many indie film gems like I Heart Huckabees (2004) and The Little Hours (2017), had died aged 47.
While most local news outlets have stated that the circumstances surrounding Baene’s death are currently unclear, TMZ reported that local authorities are treating it as a suicide.
Following the director’s death, many folks have come to social media to express their condolences to Baene’s family and to Aubrey Plaza, whom he’d been with since 2011 and got married to in 2021.
However, amongst all the messages of love, prayers and comfort for Plaza there are a bunch of men who have cracked some terrible jokes about the actor and her relationship status now that her husband has passed away.
Lingering across the ether that is X (formerly Twitter) like a bad stench, folks behind meme accounts have been posting their desire to date Plaza, writing things like “Aubrey Plaza is single again”.
(What’s even gross is that this is only just a minuscule of the ones on X.)
While these kinds of jokes began to pop up under the “Aubrey” trending tag on X, many fans of the actor and director began to stand up for them, calling these creeps out for their disgusting online behaviour.
“Aubrey Plaza just lost her husband and people are celebrating her being single again… some of you bitches deserve a place worse than hell,” one person wrote.
“‘Aubrey Plaze single’ is the LAST thing you should say. You are so fucked up. this is someone who has just passed and it’s okay to not be affected by the death of a stranger but as a decent human being you should be so ashamed of this. this is not okay. GTFO,” another X user shared on the site.
“People making ‘Aubrey Plaza is single again’ jokes are the most unfunny people you’ll ever come across. The only ‘funny’ thing about those jokes is knowing that 99 per cent of the people making them don’t talk to any women,” a third wrote.
Although most of the “Aubrey is single” posts seem to come from meme accounts that post edge lord humour, there’s nothing funny about the statement.
Not only is it disrespectful to Plaza, but it’s also creepy and gross.
You know how IGAs have a name and shame wall? We need that for the internet and all the shitty jokes folks make.
RIP Jeff Baena.
