Expectant parents issue stark warning against dry ice gender reveals after family party ends in disaster

An expectant couple have issued a warning against dry ice gender reveals after their party descended into chaos.

UK-based Amy Hamer, 30, took to TikTok to share footage of the moment she discovered the gender of her baby.

Friends and family of the couple gathered into Amy and her husband’s beautiful home to find out the baby’s gender.

The couple opted for a dry ice gender reveal, which creates a smoke bomb effect in either pink (for a girl) or blue (for a boy).

At first, Amy, the CEO of NKD Apparel, and her husband were ecstatic to learn that they are expecting a baby girl.

However, things quickly took a turn for the worse when thick pink smoke filled up the living room.

Instead of celebrating the happy news, the intense levels of smoke forced the family to evacuate the home.

‘This is your sign to not do a dry ice gender reveal inside your gorgeous home,’ Amy wrote on TikTok.

Instructions for dry ice gender reveals vary depending on the brand, though most say to carry it out in a spacious area inside or outside.

While Amy disabled comments on the video, the clip quickly racked up over five million views.

It comes after a pregnant woman shared her gender reveal cake video online only for the sponge to be green, leaving fans confused.

Carys Hardin, 26, from Wales set out to announce the gender of her third child in a TikTok video that has racked up more than 47 million views and 25,000 comments.

Gender reveal cakes have become a popular way for expecting couples to find out if they’re having a baby boy or girl.

Bakers will use either blue (for a boy) or pink (for a girl) food colouring, sprinkles, or layers of fruit filling to signify the gender of the newborn.

However, in the short clip, set to Mysha Didi’s I Get to Love You, Carys and her husband plunge two wine glasses into their gender reveal cake with yellow frosting.

However, instead of a traditional blue or pink sponge, the inside of their cake was green – leaving fans to joke she was ‘having a Slytherin’.

Harding’s followers said they were ‘confused’ by the colour of her gender reveal cake in the comments section, with one person writing: ‘Let’s normalise explaining things.’

Another person quipped: ‘Aww a beautiful green baby, congratulations.’

A third comment read: ‘Came rushing to the comments to check I’m not colourblind.’

Several TikTok users joked Harding and her husband were ‘having a Slytherin baby’, referring to one of the four houses at Hogwarts in the Harry Potter books.

‘From the comments, I’ve gathered you’re having a SlytherinTurtleDinosaur named Grass. Congrats!’ another person said.

Some wondered whether the green sponge cake was a simple baking mistake, with one user writing: ‘People, please, this is basic colour theory: blue and yellow make green, when you see green cakes 99 per cent of the time the blue pigment reacted with the yellow colour of the cake, that’s why you get green.’

A handful of Harding’s followers highlighted the rise of ‘Team Green’ pregnancies, suggesting that Harding and her husband had opted out of knowing the baby’s biological sex ahead of time.

However, the 26-year-old later clarified that they were having a boy in a follow-up video, explaining that the ‘cake didn’t quite take to the colouring’.

‘Thought I better clear this one up,’ she captioned the TikTok, referring to the flurry of comments on her earlier post.

Reacting to the post, one person wrote: ‘The only thing I thought when I saw it was that they didn’t want to know the gender till baby was born. Cause that’s what the green means.’

Another added: ‘I thought it was a joke gender reveal and it was green because y’all were gonna wait until birth to find out, congratulations though.’

A third comment read: ‘Green yellow and orange are considered gender neutral in the baby world. So yes it is true confusion for some of us.’

Harding’s TikTok proves even the best-laid gender reveal plans can sometimes go sideways.

Earlier this year, a father-to-be accidentally ruined his and his wife’s gender reveal when he popped a balloon, filled with pink or blue confetti, before the party began.

Simon and Bronagh Laverty, from Craigavon, Northern Ireland, were getting ready to host family and friends to share whether they were having a baby boy or baby girl.

But an unfortunate mishap occurred as Simon was trying to carry the confetti-filled balloon to their car.

The unlucky father-to-be inadvertently popped the balloon, releasing a blue shower of confetti, and ultimately spoiling the couple’s surprise.

The footage, captured on a video doorbell, shows tiny pieces of blue paper bursting over the porch, while Simon yells ‘oh f***’.

Bronagh also found out about what had happened, due to a motion detector alert on her phone.

Having witnessed the accident in real time, she called Simon immediately, saying: ‘What just happened? Have we literally just found out what we’re having?’

After getting over the shock of finding out they were having a boy, Simon and Bronagh were just relieved they had still found out the gender together.

With the cat out of the bag, the couple still had to fake their surprise as they’d organised a gender reveal party.

‘To be honest, we had to play along with the whole thing,’ Simon added.
