FX has renewed its comedy series English Teacher for a second season, despite ongoing sexual assault allegations against its creator and star, Brian Jordan Alvarez.

The show, which debuted in September 2024, follows a teacher at a high school in Austin, Texas navigating chaotic personal and professional challenges. While praised for its sharp writing and performances, the renewal arrives under a cloud of controversy.

In December 2024, Alvarez’s former collaborator Jon Ebeling accused him of sexual assault during their work on the 2016 YouTube series The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo.

Ebeling had spoken about these allegations multiple times in these past few years, and even posted a cryptic Instagram Story about his alleged experience about a month before English Teacher premiered, according to Sportskeeda

Alongside a snap of the show’s poster, he wrote: “My personal experience with the Creator of [English Teacher] was much closer to the plot of B*by Reind**r than whatever this is.”

Ebeling expanded on these claims in a New York Magazine article, alleging Alvarez’s misconduct and accusing English Teacher co-star Stephanie Koenig of enabling harmful dynamics.

The incident allegedly involved Alvarez “sucking [Ebeling’s] penis” under a cover while on set of a shoot. “I am assuming nobody on set knows what’s going on under the comforter, and I’m just frozen,” he said to New York Magazine

In a text to his then-girlfriend Koenig, Ebeling wrote: “We were shooting and Brian took a huge goddamn liberty. I’m so fucking upset. I feel like I was raped.”

Alvarez denied the allegations through a spokesperson in a statement on Daily Beast, calling the interactions “entirely consensual” and allegedly supported by witnesses.

FX addressed the claims cautiously, stating they had “reviewed the allegations presented prior to the show’s launch” but noted Ebeling never directly contacted the network, as reported by Forbes.

The renewal announcement made no mention of the controversy, with FX Entertainment president Nick Grad instead highlighting the show’s critical acclaim: “English Teacher was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024… We look forward to the new season,” per Variety.

Production for Season 2 is reportedly set to begin this month, though FX has not confirmed whether Alvarez will remain involved.
