England U21 7-0 Luxembourg U21: Noni Madueke, Morgan Rogers and Samuel Iling-Junior score twice in rout as Lee Carsley’s men stay on course for Euro 2025 qualification

Chelsea winger Noni Madueke extended his impressive scoring spree to five goals in six matches with a double in a 7-0 victory over Luxembourg as England Under-21s strengthened their position in their European Championship qualifying group.

Former Chelsea academy graduate Samuel Iling-Junior, now at Juventus, scored his first two goals at this level, Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Bynoe-Gittens also registered his maiden strike and Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers scored two after coming off the bench at Bolton’s Toughsheet Community Stadium.

Lee Carsley’s side took their total to 12 goals in five days after routing Azerbaijan on Friday and victory took them level with Ukraine on 18 points, eight points clear of third-placed Serbia.

However, they remain second despite a goal difference which is 14 better due to the defeat to the Group F leaders in October.

The visitors set up with damage limitation in mind but were 2-0 down by half-time and picked off at will after the break as England’s superior quality prevailed.

Goalkeeper Sam Tickle made his debut after James Trafford was called up to the senior side but apart from Fabio Lohei and Ivan Englaro both hitting the post in the second half, the home fans’ pantomime boos for his Wigan connections were more uncomfortable for him than Luxembourg’s non-existent attack.

Madueke, Harvey Elliott, James McAtee and Taylor Harwood-Bellis were the only players to retain their places from Baku, highlighting the depth of talent Carsley has at his disposal, and the benefit of retaining the first two in particular made a significant impact.

But Iling-Junior, as a marauding left-back, also impressed as his pace to get around the visitors’ five-man defence caused major problems.

Jay Stansfield, Iling-Junior, McAtee and Jarell Quansah all had chances before England’s dominance finally told in the 23rd minute with a goal of such simplicity.

Illing-Junior won possession from England’s high press and passed inside to Alex Scott who slid in Madueke on the right of the area and he caressed a left-footed shot through Franz Sinner’s legs and inside the far post.

More chances fell to McAtee and Madueke before Iling-Junior fired home a second, via a deflection, after taking down a cross from Leeds’ Archie Gray on his full debut.

Elliott’s ability to deliver the right pass saw a Madueke shot turned around a post early in the second half but the Liverpool midfielder continued to probe and after springing a counter-attack from inside England’s half he set up Bynoe-Gittens for the third.

With Luxembourg’s resilience broken, Madueke benefited from another Elliott threaded through-ball to fire home his second and Rogers’ double – having scored with his first touch – sandwiched Illing-Junior’s header at a corner.
