“Egyptian Urban Renaissance” tops discussions at the World Urban Forum

Reflecting its international standing and commitment to sustainable development, especially urban development, Egypt, as the first African country in 20 years, is hosting one of the most important global events “the twelfth session” From the World Urban Forum, under the slogan “It all starts locally… Let’s work together for sustainable cities and communities.”

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi witnessed the opening of the World Urban Forum, in the presence of Anna-Claudia Rosbach, Under-Secretary. General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, in the presence of Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen, and more than 37 thousand participants from more than 170 countries around the world, in addition to the expanded participation of ministers, their deputies, governors, and mayors from about 82 countries.

The forum aims to address the global housing crisis, the high cost of living, and emergency situations. Climate change, and the ability to plan and manage human settlements in all countries in a participatory, integrated and sustainable manner, by 2030, which is stipulated in Goal 11 of the Development Goals. Sustainable.

 

Creating new cities

The experience of creating new cities in Egypt is the largest and most successful of its kind in the world, especially since there is no country in The world has implemented so many new cities in this short period of time, so construction is not a goal in itself. Economic and development goals are the basis for urban expansion, to accommodate the population increase, create new job opportunities, and provide basic needs and activities for citizens.

The housing file, specifically the construction of new cities, has attracted great attention from the Egyptian state over the past ten years. During which it was able to build many new smart cities, which served as a cornerstone in developing radical solutions to the suffering of citizens over the past years, as the new cities represented a magical solution that achieved the Egyptian government several goals at the same time. In addition to its effective contribution to providing housing units with integrated services for citizens, it also achieved the urban expansion that Egypt has sought for many decades to confront the population increase. 

While the Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Engineer Sherif El-Sherbiny, confirmed that the Egyptian experience In urban planning, it is a rich and diverse experience, as Egypt has inspiring stories in establishing fourth generation cities, as well as developing unsafe areas and slums, noting that the Egyptian government has There are many gains in the field of housing, construction and urban planning, represented in the issue of exporting real estate and Egyptian companies working in this field abroad, in addition to local products.

He explained that the Egyptian government’s strategy in green construction aims to improve the level of quality of life and raise Efficiency of services and infrastructure, by raising awareness of the importance of urbanization and green construction among state agencies at various levels, in addition to preserving natural resources.

The New Capital

Egypt has presented to the whole world, and the Middle East region in particular, a new jewel of tourism and entertainment on the Mediterranean, as the New City of El Alamein, which extends over an area of ​​48 acres, can accommodate 3 million people, and the coastal area of ​​the city extends On an area of ​​7,770 acres, it provides 20,000 hotel rooms, through 14 multi-level residential neighborhoods.

New Alamein also contains industrial areas on an area of ​​5,000 acres, and others. Logistics on an area of ​​3,000 acres, and commercial and service facilities on an area of ​​5,000 acres.
