Egypt and Portugal are discussing cooperation on issues of immigration and refugees

Ambassador Wael El-Naggar, Egyptian Ambassador to Portugal, and Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawi, Deputy Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Immigration, Refugees and Combating Human Trafficking, discussed with Rui Freitas, Deputy Minister and Secretary of State for Presidential Affairs concerned with the immigration file in Portugal, cooperation between the two countries on issues. During the meeting, Ambassador Wael El-Naggar reviewed the most important aspects of cooperation between Egypt and Portugal to open areas for recruiting seasonal skilled Egyptian workers according to the needs of the Portuguese side, expressing his aspiration to quickly sign the proposed memorandum of understanding to organize this, similar to the memorandums that Egypt signed it with a number of other European countries.

For his part, Ambassador Wael Badawi expressed his thanks to the government of Portugal for hosting the joint meeting of the Khartoum and Rabat processes on legal migration paths, which include European Union countries and African countries on the eastern, central and western paths. The Mediterranean and the Atlantic to Europe, under a joint presidency between Egypt – head of the Khartoum Process – and Portugal – head of the Rabat Process.

The Portuguese official also indicated that his country had completed the necessary procedures to sign an agreement with the International Organization for Migration to resettle 300 refugees. Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawy welcomed this Portuguese initiative, which comes within the framework of activating the principle of sharing burdens and responsibility in accordance with the International Covenant on Migration, especially in light of the burdens that Egypt bears in hosting more than 10 million refugees and migrants, expressing his aspiration to increase the number of refugees resettled from Egypt, In light of the distinguished relations between the two countries.

In a related context, Ambassador Dr. Wael Badawi met with Mario Pedro and Marta Feio, members of the Board of Directors of the Portuguese Integration, Immigration and Asylum Agency “AIMA”, where aspects were discussed.
