Dominik Mysterio on why he doesn’t like CM Punk, making his own name and getting to work with Rhea Ripley and Liv Morgan

A few years ago, Dominik Mysterio was Rey Mysterio’s son. Now, Dirty Dom is so, so much more.

As WWE’s chief heat magnet, the 28-year-old has become the man fans love to hate enabling him to truly separate himself from his Hall of Fame dad.

At WrestleMania 41 night two, Mysterio goes for singles gold in a four-way for the Intercontinental title.

That’s significant enough, but it’s also his first WrestleMania where he isn’t tied at the hip to his dad.

Another first at WrestleMania this weekend was CM Punk in the main event. Speaking to Mail Sport in Las Vegas, it’s safe to say Dirty Dom is no fan of the veteran.

‘It is what it is,’ Dom started. ‘When children have their tantrums the only way to get them to shut the f*** up is to give them what they want, right? I just don’t like him.

‘I hope he doesn’t like me. Who cares? I don’t care if he likes me or dislikes me, I couldn’t care less. I just know I don’t like him.’

Dom is flanked by Liv Morgan these days after a sensational run alongside Rhea Ripley in the Judgment Day.

Our question to Dom is: Does he have some powerful friends in the writing room to team up with such beautiful ladies?!

‘[Laughs] Dom’s got game, that’s all that is. Dom knows how to talk, Dom knows how to dress and it is what it is. Come take some notes,’ Dom chuckles.

It’s hard for any child of a legend to assert themselves in any industry. Bronny James being a famous example in the NBA today.

But Mysterio has done fantastically well to establish himself as his own entity, arguably the premiere bad guy in the whole company.

‘I still feel like I’m just getting started because we’re what, four years in? I’ve already established myself as the greatest Mysterio of all-time and in record time. People asked “how are you going to fill his shoes” – in record time.

‘He’s an afterthought at this point. I think it’s awesome. Especially this WrestleMania being my first WrestleMania having nothing to do with him, it’s been really good.’

Being the son of the greatest luchador to ever lace up their boots comes with expectations of how you will perform in the ring.

Dom can handle that, but he went the other way with it. He has crafted a character that will illicit some of the biggest reactions on the card. How has he done that?

‘It’s all just kind of come naturally. Step by step, day by day, seeing what works and what doesn’t,’ Mysterio explains.

‘At the end of the day, we really have no say on the times that we get so we go out there and do the best with what we’ve got.

‘So if I’ve got 20 minutes to go out there, I’m gonna go out there for 20 f****** minutes and give it my best. If it’s five minutes, I’ll do what I can in five minutes. That’s the importance of it; taking it day by day, living in the moment and being adaptable.’

Mysterio will share the ring with IC champion Bron Breakker, Penta and fellow Judgement Day brother, Finn Balor when he goes for gold on Sunday.

There has been tension between Mysterio and the Irishman in storyline, but how has it been spending the past couple of years working so closely with him?

‘Finn is the dad that stepped up for me. He’s been that dude as far as I can remember.

‘Even when I was tagging with my deadbeat dad, we’d be tagging overseas in six-mans and Finn would be that third guy for us. I met him in 2017, he’s just been a constant in my life in this wrestling world.

‘And then when I heard I was going to be in the Judgement Day he was just that guy who helped me and guided me through everything. He’s been amazing, I couldn’t be more grateful to him,’ Dom beamed.
