Actress Demi Moore has had the internet in tears after giving a beautiful acceptance speech at the 2025 Golden Globes. Since winning her first award, folks online are now showering The Substance‘s star with support and thanks for her message.
While accepting the Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy award for her role in 2024’s The Substance, Moore began by stating she “really wasn’t expecting” the win.
Despite this phrase being used by almost every award recipient since the dawn of award shows, Moore actually had more reason than most to have set such low expectations.
As she went on to explain in her heartfelt speech, the 62-year-old actress has never received any sort of major accolade for her performance in anything.
“I’m just in shock right now, I’ve been doing this a long time, like over 45 years,” she said.
“And this is the first time I’ve ever won anything as an actor.”
Moore then vulnerably recounted how three decades ago she was brutally told by a producer that she was a “popcorn actress”, and would never enjoy such credit for her work.
“Thirty years ago, I had a producer tell me that I was a popcorn actress,” said Moore.
“And at that time I made that mean that this [award] wasn’t something that I was allowed to have. That I could do movies that were successful, that made a lot of money, but that I couldn’t be acknowledged. I bought in, and I believed that.
“And that corroded me over time, to the point where I thought a few years ago that maybe this was it, maybe I was complete. I’ve done what I was supposed to do.
The star then explained that while she was at a low point, she found the “courageous, out-of-the-box, absolutely bonkers” script for The Substance, and knew she needed to star in it.
After thanking her fellow cast and crew, including director Coralie Fargeat and co-star Margaret Qualley, Moore shared a final powerful anecdote before ending her speech.
“I’ll just leave you with one thing that I think this movie is imparting,” Moore continued, “is in those moments when we don’t think we’re smart enough or pretty enough or skinny enough or successful enough, or basically just not enough — I had a woman say to me, ‘Just know you will never be enough, but you can know the value of your worth if you just put down the measuring stick.’”

Following the emotional speech, fans of Moore rallied online to shower the actress with praise for her poignant message, and well-deserved award.
“Well deserved. I was rooting for her. I now believe the Academy will give her first Oscar nomination,” one fan wrote on X.
“Very few award speeches make me cry, and this made me cry! I’m so happy for her! She deserves it!” praised another.
Others shared the sentiment that Moore was worthy of winning “all the awards” thanks to her “incredible” performance as Elisabeth in The Substance.
Though no nominations for the 97th Academy Awards in March have been announced yet, it’s fair to say that there might be even more fancy accolades in Moore’s future.
