Dee Carrion crafted Doechii’s ‘soft glam’ face-tape look for the Grammys

A signature look is a key component of so many great artists and musicians, from Andy Warhol’s shock of white hair to the slime-green roots that helped propel Billie Eilish to stardom. During what has turned out to be an absolute breakthrough year for Doechii, her own signature beauty accessory has emerged: face tape.

While most people wear their face tape – which is used to get a lifted effect – in a subtle, often hidden way, Doechii has taken to sporting it fully exposed, from her temples and over her hair so that it becomes purposefully incorporated into her look. In doing so she reveals and exposes something that’s not meant to be seen or put on show, a vulnerability and rawness that is characteristic of her lyrics and artistic approach. “Authenticity wins. Vulnerability wins,” as she said in response to winning her Grammy for best rap album for Alligator Bites Never Heal.

In charge of the make-up for the occasion was Dee Carrion, Doechii’s longtime make-up artist and Dazed 100 alum, who created a soft glam look to complement her hair by Malcolm Marquez, who blended waves into her braided style. The face tape was, of course, present and elevated for the occasion with the added sparkle of rhinestones. To prep the skin for the look, Carrion teamed up with The Ordinary using Natural Moisturizing Factors + Phyto Ceramides and the Soothing Barrier Support System to hydrate and moisture. Carrion spoke to Dazed about the look and her beauty philosophy.

What was the vision behind Doechii’s Grammys look and how did it come to life?

Dee Carrion: We spent around two months talking and planning this look. The entire glam team would get on calls almost everyday bouncing ideas back and forth. When she settled on Thom Browne I began planning a moodboard playing around with more editorial and glam looks. Because she has such amazing moments going on with her outfit and hair, I kept the glam fairly simple. We decided on a soft grey glam with some sparkle and added that editorial feel with face tapes.

Can you tell us a bit about Doechii’s signature face tape? It’s become so iconic.

Dee Carrion: Yes! The first time we used them was for the Willy Chavarria show during NYFW in 2024. It really sparked a conversation! We both loved them so much that we started incorporating it into her regular style. Now it’s become such an iconic accessory to her look. We did rhinestone ones for Grammys and that was just the beginning.

What is your biggest advice for your make-up approach?

Dee Carrion: Make sure you’re prepared for anything. Be able to think on the spot.

What’s an essential tour beauty product?

Dee Carrion: Mehron Barrier Spray and the One size On til Dawn setting spray. Your face will NOT move!

What role do you think beauty plays in shaping an artist’s identity on stage?

Dee Carrion: I think it plays a huge role. When it comes to Doechii specifically, glam is such a big part of her performance. She’s really big on creating characters and embodying them fully. I think one of the best examples of that was when we did the clown face during Doja’s tour.

How has your beauty philosophy evolved, and what continues to inspire it?

Dee Carrion: Trying to think outside of the box, doing something that hasn’t been done before, and trying something that may make you slightly uncomfortable. Currently I feel like my inner child is what’s inspiring and nourishing that right now. More specifically my 16-year-old self – I was doing the most creative looks without any fear! I was creating so freely. I’m trying to get on that level again.

What’s one common beauty belief that needs to be challenged?

Dee Carrion: Beauty standards. All of them.

What does the future of beauty look like to you?

Dee Carrion: More individuality, more representation of Black artists, more representation of queer artists. And the fall of ‘no make-up make-up’.
