Darts superstar Michael van Gerwen is dealing with a health problem he has been unable to ‘shake off’ for over TWO MONTHS, reveals close friend

A close friend of three-time world champion Michael van Gerwen has revealed the darts superstar has been battling with a health issue for over two months.
Van Gerwen, 35, failed to win a major title in 2024, but looked to be returning to his best form when he made the World Championship final at the start of 2025 before losing to Luke Littler.
However, he has struggled for consistency in recent months, and fellow darts star Vincent van der Voort has now spoken out about a possible reason behind Van Gerwen’s woes.
Speaking on the Darts Draait Door podcast, Van Der Voort claimed Van Gerwen fell ill while on holiday at the start of the year and has still not been given a clean bill of health.
‘He’s been struggling with a virus or infection for quite some time now,’ Van Der Voort said.
‘He picked it up during his holiday in Thailand back in early January, and he just hasn’t been able to shake it off. On top of that, he’s not in his best form.’

The 35-year-old Dutchman has not won a major title for over 12 months

Van Der Voort also stated his fellow Dutchman is still undergoing treatment as he added: ‘He was already at the doctor’s this morning.’
This is not the first time that Van Gerwen has been hampered by medical issues since he burst onto the scene.
After winning his first world title in 2014, Van Gerwen appeared the heir apparent to Phil Taylor, and he ruled the world again in 2017 and 2019.
But he has fallen back into the pack as his health has deteriorated in recent years.
Van Gerwen has had countless problems with his jaw, suffering from an underbite that has caused him severe pain. He recently claimed the discomfort became so intense that ‘even a slice of ham’ became tough to bite.
He underwent two surgeries in 2024 to correct his jaw issues, which affect his breathing and sleep, and can now be seen wearing braces.
He also suffers from gout – a type of arthritis in the foot that commonly affects people at an older age.
Van Gerwen has previously admitted to having sudden and severe joint pain in his big toe, which can cause various problems with his dart throw given the stance he takes at the oche.

Van Gerwen is still looking for his first nightly win in this season’s Premier League Darts
Despite his health issues, Van Gerwen has continued competing and is set to feature in week seven of the Premier League Darts in Cardiff tonight.
He is yet to pick up a nightly win this season, but has still picked up 10 points to sit fourth in the eight-man table below Littler (16), Luke Humphries (15) and Gerwyn Price (12).
The top four players will compete in the end-of-season playoffs at London’s O2 Arena on May 29.
